Having a grandparent with dementia might have a variety of impacts on grandchildren, some positive (such as stronger family cohesion) and some negative (i.e. stressful experience). A qualitative study carried out in Germany on grandchildren of people with dementia concluded that living in a family that has difficulties in coping with the situation might be more demanding than dealing with the behavior and psychological symptoms of dementia. Therefore, the grandchildren should be given access to age-appropriate information about the disease and the ways to communicate effectively with their grandparent needing care.
